Therapy of Central Ablatio Retinae in Patients with Optic Nerve Pit

Purpose: Optic nerve pit and optic nerve coloboma with a pit are rare, occurring in less than one out of 10.000 patients seen by ophthalmologists, 25 to 75% present with a sensory retinal detachment of the macula. Although spontaneous reattachment has been reported, most eyes with macular detachment associated with optic nerve pit have a poor visual prognosis. We present 3 patients with optic nerve pit, each with reduced vision caused by an associated sensory retinal detachment of the macula.
Method: Two 17 and a 42 years old patients exhibiting optic disc pit and central ablatio retinae were examined. The first patient had a visual acuity of 1/35. The second patient had a visual acuity of 0,05. Third patient, a 46-years-old woman had a complete retina detachment (PVR C) due to a optic disc coloboma. The visual acuity was no light perception. The first tow patients were operated with pars-plana-vitrectomy, membrane-peeling, endolaser, peridisc laser coagulation and gas (C2F6) tamponade. In the third patient an additional encircling procedure were performed, the posterior segment was filled with silicon-oil.
Results: In all three patients Postoperatively was the retina attached. In the first two patients we record visual acuities of 0,2 after 1 and 5 years follow up. In the third patient there was no change in the visual acuity.
