Fixation Patterns and Visual Outcome after Macular Translocation for Neovascular Age-related Macular Degeneration

Purpose: To analyse the fixation patterns and visual outcome of patients underwent macular translocation (360°-MT) with 360° retinotomy for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Method: Eight eyes of the 8 consecutive patients with neovascular AMD were included in the study. All patients underwent vitrectomy, 360° retinotomy, extraction of the choroidal neovascularisation (CNV), macular translocation and silicone oil installation. Removal of the silikon oil and muscle surgery was performed 3 months later. All patients had subfoveal classic CNV. One patient had persistent CNV after multiple photodynamic therapy. A scanning laser ophthalmocope (Rodenstock Instrumente GmbH, Germany) was used for detection of the fixation-patterns before the 360° MT and in 3 month controls. Primary outcomes were the stability and the localisation of fixation. Results: Mean follow-up was 7 months (range 3-12 months) At initial examination 75 % (6/8) of the eyes and 62,5% (5/8) of the eyes had stable fixation and central fixation, respectively. At the last follow-up examination 62,5% (5/8) of the eyes had stable fixation. Central fixation was found in 75% (6/8) of the eyes in the final control examination. The final visual acuity in 50% (4/8) of the patients was unchanged or improved. In this group of patients the fixation pattern was stable in 2 eyes and central in 3 eyes a
