University-Partnership Basel - Addis Abeba

Purpose: In 1999 the initial idea of a cooperation between the university eye-clinic Basel and the university eye-clinic in Addis Abeba was established to support the further development of ophthalmology in Ethiopia, one of the poorest countries in Africa.
Results: In order to create a broad basis of support, a charitable association was founded, where the clinic-staff and other interested persons could contribute. The initial cooperation of the two clinics resulted in various new experiences. After some time of getting to know each other and evaluation of expectations and needs, the requirement of a clearly formulated basis of cooperation became obvious. Since then a Letter of Consent has been created and the collaboration has been organized in specified projects. On this basis a very interesting and, for both sides, profitable exchange of ideas, know-how and resources on the fields of post-graduate education, research and medical routine care is developing.
