The Portable Tonometer TGDc-01 and the Goldmann Applanation and Air Puff Tonometry in Comparison a Pilot Study

Purpose: The new tonometer TGDc-01 represents a portable system for transpalpebral IOP measurement. Aim of the present pilot study was the comparison of the measurement results of TGDc-01 with those of the Goldmann applanation tonometry and air puff tonometry. Method: IOP was measured in 100 eyes of 50 patients (M:F = 30:20, mean age: 56.5 ± 20.4 years) in a crossover design with an interval of 20 min by applying TGDc-01, Goldmann applanation tonometry and air puff tonometry. Results: Mean IOP value was 11.2 ± 4.4 SD mmHg when measured by TGDc-01, 13.1 ± 2.3 SD mmHg when measured by Goldmann applanation tonometry, and 14.6 ± 3.0 SD mmHg for air puff tonometry, respectively. The difference between the 3 groups was statistically significant (p< 0.05, ANOVA for repeated measurements). The highest correlation (r=0.55, p<0.001) was found for Goldmann applanation tonometry and air puff tonometry. The correlation for TGDc-01 and Goldmann applanation tonometry was r=0.33 (p<0.0015), and r=0.3 (p<0.004) for TGDc-01 and air puff tonometry. r=0.3 (p<0.004). Conclusions: The TGDc-01 allows transpalpebral measurement of IOP without local anaesthesia. The measurement was well tolerated by the patients.
