Vasoproliferative Tumours of the Retina - A Follow-up

Purpose: Vasoproliferative tumours of the retina (VTR) are a rare clinical entity but important differential diagnosis to malignant and non-malignant intraocular diseases. Therapeutic regimes and clinical courses in 51 cases will be demonstrated.
Method: Since 1993 51 cases (2 bilateral) of VTR have been treated in Essen and Berlin, age ranged from 15 to 81 years (medium 53 y). Symptoms like decreased visual acuity, retinal exsudation and bleeding, exsudative retinal detachment and macular edema occured frequently. Tumours were found in 67% in the lower temporal sector of the retina. A diagnostic transretinal biopsy was necessary in 3 cases. Therapy consisted of brachytherapy in 36, kryocoagulation in 2, transpupillary thermotherapy in 1 and enucleation in 1 patients. In 11 cases a precise tumour observation was performed.
Results: In 39 of 40 tumours treated by brachytherapy, kryo- or thermotherapy a regression could be achieved. Tumours size decreased from 2,7 mm to 1,5 mm. Complications due to brachytherapy were rare. One eye had to be enucleated because of secondary glaucoma and phthisis, in 6 cases cataract surgery, in 4 cases vitrectomy and in another 4 cases glaucoma surgery had to be performed. Visual acuity was unchanged or improved in 72% in treated eyes.
