A Histopathological Evaluation of the Retinal Surface and the ILM after the Use of Glucose 5% diluted Indocyanine Green

Purpose: To describe the impact of glucose 5% diluted ICG on the human retina, and to evaluate the ultrastructure of tissue harvested during ICG-assisted surgery for macular hole. Method: Possible adverse effects of a glucose 5% diluted ICG (Pulsion, Munich and Infracyanine, Paris) solution was evaluated in four donor eyes in an experimental setting using ICG in a concentration of 0.05%. In one eye, the retinal surface was illuminated using the light source of a standard vitrectomy machine, in the other ey, ICG was applied without illumination. The adjacent retina that did not come into contact with the dye served as a control. The retinae were histologically evaluated using light- and electron-microscopy. Additionally, the ultrastructure of the ILM of four eyes that underwent ICG-assisted vitrectomy for a macular hole was examined. Results: In the postmortem study significant alterations of the inner retina suggesting adverse effects of 0.05% glucose 5% diluted ICG were observed, idependently from the ICG product. A desorganisation of the inner retina and an absence of the internal limiting membrane was seen after the application of the dye with additional illumination.
