Vitreoretinal Interactions and the Refractive Surgeon

Purpose: The majority of patients undergoing refractive surgery are myopic and therefore at increased risk of vitreoretinal pathology. This presentation reviews the requirements of pre-operative assessment, theoretical risks/pathogenesis and a meta-analysis of the incidence of retinal pathology following laser refractive surgery. The specific difficulties of vitreo-retinal surgery are reviewed.
Conclusions: Patients undergoing refractive surgery are at increased risk of vitreoretinal pathology. Whilst there are theoretical risk, there is limited evidence of an increased incidence of retinal detachment.
