Purpose: To objectively investigate and compare focal abnormalities of retinal function in patients with choroidal hemangioma prior to and after photodynamic therapy using multifocal electroretinography (mfERG). Method: 10 patients (10 eyes) with symptomatic choroidal hemangioma were treated with photodynamic therapy (PDT). They had a decrease in visual acuity and subretinal exudation involving the fovea. 103 focal ERGs of the central 25°x30° evoked by hexagonal stimuli were recorded using mfERG (VERIS-system, EDI, San Francisco) prior to and after PDT. The stimulus was presented with a maximal luminance of 300 cd/sqm. The response components were extracted for each stimulated retinal location. Ring averages were used in order to exclude any side effects of PDT. Mean amplitudes and implicit times (1st order kernel) of ring 1 (center) to ring 6 (periphery) with different eccentricity were evaluated. Normalized amplitudes and implicit times of the first through (mfERG N1-component) and first peak (mfERG P1 component) were calculated. MfERG recordings prior to and after PDT were compared to each other. Results: Mean amplitudes of ring 1 to 6 were increased by 23%-118% (N1) and 31%-97% (P1) compared to the recordings prior PDT ("normalized" amplitudes). The increase in amplitudes was most pronounced for ring 1 and 2. The P1 implicit times of ring 1-6 were reduced by 5-20% (N1) and 7%-12% (P1
