Functional Outcomes of the Macular Hole Surgery with and without ICG Staining

Purpose: The introduction of indocyanine green (ICG) to stain internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling facilitated the recognition of the fine ILM membrane. Since then, ICG related possible toxicity has been discussed.
Method: In a retrospective study we examined a total of 72 eyes who were submitted to pars plana vitrectomy for macular hole treatment. 26 eyes were operated by the ICG-assisted ILM. 46 had the ILM peeled without staining. All surgeries were performed by the same surgeon. A comparison of the functional outcomes of these two groups was made. The best corrected snellen visual acuity (VA) of the last visit was utilized.
Results: The follow-up time was from 6 to 24 months. In those eyes which ICG was used VA improved as an average three, as an average from 0,2 (range, 0,05-0,5) to 0,4 (range, 0,08 - 1,0). In the group which ICG-staining was not performed VA improved as an average three from 0,1 (range, 0,05-0,4) to 0,2 (range, 0,02-1,0). The difference between the two groups was not statistic significant.
Conclusions: ICG improves visualization of the ILM. In this study similar functional outcomes in the two groups was achieved.
