Funduscorrelated Microperimetry in the Functional Evaluation of Diabetic Macular Edema
Charbel Issa P., Schrader W. F. Universitäts-Augenklinik, Würzburg
Purpose: Fluorescein angiography not always permits a prediction about the functional deficits in macular edema. Just as little, classic computed perimetry offers adequate evidence about the underlying morphological changes. Method: In a pilot study, we examined 5 diabetic patients with funduscorrelated Microperimetry (Nidek MP1). An integrated eye tracking system continuously tracks the position of the light stimulus on the examined retinal area during the analysis. We compared the funduscorrelated perimetric data with the fluorescein angiographic findings. Results: We found a good correlation of the microperimetric results with the funduscopic and fluorescein angiographic detectable changes. Also avascular areas could be predicted perimetrically. Conclusions: Microperimetry with the Nidek MP1 Microperimeter permits - with its steady eye-tracking system - allows a good assessment of the functional deficits of ophthalmoscopic and fluorescein angiographic apparent changes in diabetic macular edema. Currently, we investigate the value of this method in the follow-up of diabetic macular edemas in the evaluation of new therapeutic procedures for treating macular edema (Triamcinolon, ILM peeling).
