Atypical Manifestation of a Toxoplasmosis Infection Caused by the Abuse of Anabolic

Purpose: The Protozoon Toxoplasma Gondii typically causes a retinochorioiditis juxtapapillaris Jensen which shows complete defects of the retina and chorioidea and proliferation of the pigment epithelium at the edges. Retinal vessel occlusions and large necrosis of the retina are atypical and rare manifestations. In certain courses it is difficult to distinguish viral and bacterial infections of the retina. We show a patient with atypical infection of toxoplasmosis after the abuse of anabolic for several years.
Method: The 32 year old myopic patient had a loss of vision of the left eye for 8 weeks. Recurrent unclear chorioretinitis of both eyes is reported in the earlier medical history. Congenital infection or serological detection of toxoplasmosis could not be identified. Ohthalmological findings: The left eye showed no intracameral but a moderate vitreous reaction. A pigmented and well-defined scar of the chorioretina was located in the nasal inferior segment. In the temporal part a fluffy, white invasion of the retina with new praeretinal hemorrhage at the temporal edge could be seen. The right eye showed a pigmented scar located to the optic disc and occluded vessels in the periphery of the retina.
Results: The chemistry laboratory ascertains a positive IgM-Titer in ELISA as a proof for a new infection and a positive IgG-Titer for Herpes simplex. Negative results were found for HIV, C
