Blood-pressure Induced Myogenic Autoregulation of Human Retinal Arterioles in Patients with Unilaterally Acute Hearing Loss

Purpose: The aetiology of acute hearing loss is unexplained up to now. Both a viral and a vascular pathomechanism are discussed in literature. the The labyrinthic artery is the feeding vessel for the internal ear and a functional endartery as well as the central retinal artery. Hence a possibly disturbed microcirculation might be traceable in retinal arterioles as well. The Retinal-Vessel-Analyzer (RVA) offers the unique opportunity of non-invasive online measurements of retinal vessel diameters.
Method: In so far 9 patients with unilaterally acute hearing loss aged 56.5±20.9 years continuous measurement of retinal arterioles over a period of 9 minutes was performed by means of RVA. After a 3-min baseline measurement isometric exercise provoked a rise in blood pressure. During the following three minutes recovery was recorded. Blood pressure and heart rate were documented simultaneously throughout the experiment.
Results: All patients showed a significant rise in blood pressure of 11.7±8.9 mmHg (MAP, p<0.001) during exercise. During rise of blood pressure a significant vasoconstriction of 1.5% approximately with respect to the baseline measurements with no traceably significant difference between both eyes were found.
