Corneal Thickness and Glaucoma

Purpose: In general, in patients with glaucoma the cornea is thicker than in normals. The corneal thickness influences the tonometric evaluations. Corneal thickness can be modified by local medical treatment. With latanoprost the corneal thickness is supposed to be lower, but it rose after dorzolamid treatment. Therefore, the aim of the study was to clarify if these results are relevant to clinical and practical use.
Method: 262 consecutive patients with glaucoma but without corneal damage were investigated with an ultrasonic device (pachymeter DGH 2000). The patients got one or several eye drops. 29 patients received latanoprost without dorzolamid (the age of the patients ranged between 42 and 87 years, median 70 years; 12 male, 17 female), and 24 patients were treated with dorzolamid without latanoprost (their age ranged from 39 to 81 years, median 71 years; 10 male, 14 female).
