Prognosis of the Glaucomato-cyclitic Crisis (Posner-Schlossman Syndrome)

Purpose: In patients with Posner-Schlossman Syndrome (PSS) with a follow-up period of 7 and more years, we evaluated retrospectively: 1. Age of the patients at the onset of typical symptoms, 2. Frequency and stage of glaucomatous visual field loss and frequency of visual field deterioration, 3. Maximum intraocular pressure (IOP) within the observation period, 4. Frequency of IOP-lowering surgery.
Method: 15 patients (17 eyes) were included. Other forms of secondary glaucoma were excluded. If the final eye examination was performed more than 2 months ago, the ophthalmologist in practice was asked for actual findings including visual field printouts. Staging of the visual field defect was performed according to the Aulhorn classification.
Results: The average observation period (median) was 16 years (7-29 years). The average age of the patient at the onset of typical symptoms was 31 years (median) (21-48 years). The average age of the patient at the time of evaluation was 42 years (median) (35-63 years). Two thirds of the patients were male. In 2 patients, PSS was found bilateral. The average maximum IOP during glaucomatocyclitic crisis was 50 mmHg (median) (28-70 mmHg). 9 of 17 eyes (53%) underwent a filtration surgery and in one eye, a cyclocryo-therapy and a argon laser trabeculoplasty were performed additionally.
