The Distribution of the Langerhans Cells in the Normal Human Cornea. The First Experience with the Rostock Cornea Module

Purpose: The Langerhans cells (LC) are the sole antigen presenting cells able to stimulate native T cells and initiate a primary immune response. The quantitative estimation of the corneal LC is defiantly one of the possible characteristics of the immune situation of an eye.
Method: Due to the combination of the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT II) with Rostock Cornea Module the higher dissolving rate of the picture as well as the changing of the picture level from retina to the anterior segment of the eye are achieved. The magnification rate of the in-vivo picture from 400 till 800 is possible without any changes in the Hard- and Software of the HRT II. The device included a contact system under the video control. The focus level can be defined and changed in the axial direction by external manual and accordingly internal z-scan. So, the semiquantitative estimation of the cell density is possible. The identification of the LC was made by immunehistiochemical monoclonal Mouse-Anti-Human HLA-DR (clone G46-6) staining. Study group: 170 eyes of the 100 healthy probands ( 60 females, 40 males) aged 20 - 75. The confocal microscopy was performed after the slit lamp investigation.
