Results of the First 120 Patients with the Accommodative Posterior Chamber Lens 1 CU

Purpose: Aim of this study is the determination of refraction, accommodation, safety and rate of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) in patients following implantation of the accommodative posterior chamber lens 1 CU (HumanOptics). Method: After the first implantation in June 2000 there are now 120 patients who underwent phacoemulsification and implantation of the accommodative 1CU in our department. According to our inclusion and exclusion criteria patients were choosen carefully1 . All operations were performed by one surgeon and the postoperative treatment was standardized1. 61 patients (age: 59±14 yrs.) were included in a prospective study with a mean postoperative follow-up of 10±7 (3 to 30) months. Complete ophthalmological examination included: Distance refraction (spherical equivalent SEQ), near visual acuity (Birkhäuser charts in 35 cm) obtained with best distance correction (NVA), subjective near point obtained with distance correction (NP), accommodative range measured by near point (AR), anterior chamber depth determined with the IOL Master without pupil dilation or constriction (ACD) and corneal endothelial cell density (ECD). Results: Surgery was uncomplicated in all patients, and the PCIOLs were well-centered in the capsular bag at all times. So far no IOL-dislocation or myopisation was seen.
