Comparison of 10 MHz and 20 MHz Sonography in Investigation of Retinal and Choroidal Changes

Purpose: The paper investigates the problems, advantages and potential applications of 20 MHz ultrasound devices in comparison to conventional 10 MHz ultrasound in investigation of the posterior pole of the eye. Method: Patients with pathologies like chorioidal naevus, chorioidal melanoma and senile macular degeneration was investigated with 10 MHz ultrasound and 20 MHz ultrasound probe in vivo. In this clinical examination was the comparison between the two methods shown with regards to differentiation of the wall of the bulb. Results: In the comparison of 10 MHz and 20 MHz ultrasound investigations the high frequence ultrasound allows a better differentiation of struktures in retinal and choroidal changes. Conclusions: High-frequency ultrasound should be given a better differentiation of retinal or choroidal pathologies. The use of 20 MHz frequency improves the resolution, the use is easy and can be helpful in the evaluation of unclear pathologies in cases with non sufficient retinal view (opacities of cornea, lens and vitreous).
