Results after PDT of Occult CNV in Age-related Macular Degeneration

Purpose: Since October 2001 252 photodynamic therapies (PDT) of 120 patients were performed in the Dept. of Ophthalmology at the Klinikum Hannover. For this study 27 eyes of 26 patients with occult choroidal neovasculaization (CNV) in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) were included who were treated between 04/02 and 12/02. Inclusion criterias were according to the VIP study. The mean age of the patients at the time of first treatment was 73.2 years (59-88 years).
Method: The following parameters were examined at baseline and follow-up visits: visual acuity, Amsler test, and FAG- und ICG-AG. Technical parameters of treatment were according to the recommendations and protocols of the VIP-study. However, re-treatment was performed only in those cases with angiographic findings and clinical deterioration. Size of leakage area was calculated by digital measurement in the late phase of the FAG. Control angiography was performed in 3 months intervals after treatment sessions or additionally according to clinical course. The mean follow-up after PDT was 6.5 months (3-11 months).
Results: 65 % of 27 eyes had a stable or increased visual acuity at the end of follow-up. In 73 80 % fluorescein leakage was reduced after each PDT session, membrane size was reduced in 38.5 %.
