Purpose: High frequency B-scan ultrasonography is a proven method for the assessment of lacrimal system diseases. Only rare studies have used sonography to examine lacrimal drainage system. We examined the proximal lacrimal drainage system by high resolution 20-MHz-ultrasound to verify and identify intracanalicular lacrimal plugs. Method: The patients received lacrimal plug implants were examined by high resolution ultrasound. A 20-MHz-sectorscanner was used for examination. Longitudinal and diametral cross section of the lacrimal canaliculi were obtained. Results: The various intracanalicular implants was successfully viewed using a 20-MHz-ultrasound sectorscanner. Intracanalicular plugs silicone plugs, acrylic polymer plugs) were located. Conclusions: High resolution ultrasound with 20-MHz-sectorscanner is very helpful in detecting intracanalicular plugs and is a valuable toll to assess the migration of lacrimal plugs through lacrimal canaliculi. 20-MHz-sectorscanner can be used for identifying indication and localizing of lacrimal plugs in the proximal drainage system.
