Comparison of Transpalpepral Tonometry Using TGDc-01-tonometer with Goldmann Applanation Tonometry in Glaucoma Patients

Purpose: Transpalpebral measurement of intraocular pressure (IOP) has some advantages in comparison to the Goldmann applanation tonometry: the easily transportable and handy TGDc-01-device seems to lower the risk of iatrogen infections and preceding local anesthetics are not necessary. Here both methods were compared in patients with different forms of glaucoma.
Method: IOP measurements in 100 eyes of 50 patients (m:f = 28:22; median of age distribution: 66 years, 27-91 years) were performed by one person after having passed a learning period. Within some minutes both eyes of each patient received 10 measurements with TGDc-01 and 3 measurements with Goldmann tonometer in a randomized manner. A second person documented the IOP readings.
Results: The median of IOP measured with Goldmann (G) was 15.5, ranging form 6 to 50 mmHg. The median of IOP measured with TGDc-01 (T) was 17.3, ranging form 6 to 40 mmHg. The mean difference (T-G) of averaged values in both procedures was -0,40. The correlation coefficient R between these values was 0,61.
