Crystalens Clinical Results with a New Accommodative Lens

Purpose: Accommodative intraocular lenses reveal the potential alternative to multifocal lenses in regards to being independent from any refractive aid.
Method: We examined six patients following the implantation of an accommopdative IOL (Crystalens, C&C-Vision, AT-45) after a routine phacoemulsification. The study included mesuring distance-, intermediate- and near-vision, anterior chamber depth before and after application of pilocarpine, contrast sensitivity and ratings of patients satisfaction.
Results: The accoommodative effect caused a broad variety of satisfaction among the patients within the follow-up period of 6.0 ± 4.2 months. The anterior chamber depth decreased approximately 0.5 mm following the application of pilocarpine in comparison to a mild decrease during intended accommodation. The defocussing curve diplayed only small effects concerning the achievement of accommodation and this was confirmed by the refractive measurements. Patients achieved up to 1.25 D of accommdative range with a satisfying distance visual acuity and contrast sensitivity.
Conclusions: In summary, only a few of our patients benefited from the implantation of an accommodative Crystalens due to the low accommodative effect.
