Purpose: The Sovereign phacoemulsification system has shown promising results in reducing the energy required for ultrasound, resulting in "cold phaco". This video demonstrates the feasability of this concept with different views. Clinical data from 219 cataract procedures were analysed for phacoenergy and phacopower. Fluid dynamics and turbulances were visualised using an intracameral videoendoscope during phacoemulsification. Temperature changes were analysed during surgery using high resolution infrared thermotopography.
Results: Average phacoenergy was 6.27 seconds (± 7.53). Videoendoscopic view showed very few turbulances. Infrared thermotopography showed low maximum values using the white star technology around 25° to 28°. Without white star technology temperature rose up to 40° to 45°.
Conclusions: Sovereign Phaco machine provides a significant decrease in phacoenergy output during cataract surgery.
