Digital Fluorescence and Indocyanine-green Angiography Using Solid State Laser-based Digital Confocal Scanning-Laser Ophthalmoscopy

Purpose: Digital fluorescence angiography based on cSLO-technology offers various advantages over conventional imaging techniques using fundus cameras. We describe features and aspects of clinical application of a novel cSLO. Method: Red free, infrared, autofluorescence, fluorescein and indocyanine green frames were obtained with a Heidelberg Retina Angiograph II (HRA, Heidelberg Engineering) and compared to HRA I images. Instead of an argon laser (488 nm) an optically pumped solid state (OPS) laser is used in the HRA II to generate blue excitation light. For IR and ICG recordings a diode laser (820 and 790 nm respectively) is used. Results: The enhanced resolution of up to 5 mm per pixel even in 30°x30° images allows for delineation of even fine alterations. Further improvements including an internal fixation control, an increased focus range of -24 to +24 dpt as well as an interactive touch panel facilitate routine imaging. As a result of the improved optics and the enhanced image quality an increased focus difference between FA and ICG scans may occur in the simultaneous FA/ICG-mode. While interferences could be eliminated for the IR mode corneal artefacts persist in red free images.
