Improvement of Medical Communication in Older Patients Attending an Ophthalmologic Clinic Using a Temporary Hearing Aid

Purpose: The increasing ageing of industrialised countries conditioned that patients with ocular diseases, also show auditive deficits leading to problems in communication. The aim of this study was to analyse options for optimising the communication with their eye doctor by fitting a temporal hearing aid.
Method: During ophthalmologic consultation 55 patients (29f, 26m) with communication problems due to hearing loss were provided with an acustic amplifier (Audioport A 200; Sennheiser, Germany). Data according to the level of hearing loss, use and experience with other hearing aids, speech perception and compliance with the new applied hearing aid were meassured by a questionaire.
Results: 38% patients (n=21) possesed a hearing aid which was not used at the moment of consultation. The use of the new amplifier was accepted in all cases. Speech perception was evaluated as follows: 0% "worse", 2% "no changes", 44% "better", 45% "good" and 9% "very good".
Conclusions: The presented acustic amplifier is a simple, usefull tool for optimising communication with patients showing hearing loss consulting an ophthalmologic clinic.
