Adjunctive Use of Mitomycin C for Prevention of Corneal Haze after Phototherapeutic Keratectomy in Corneal Graft

Purpose: To demonstrate the results of a prophylactic use of mitomycin C for prevention of corneal haze after phototherapeutic keratectomy in two post keratoplasty cases.
Method: The first case was a 34 year old male with deep anterior stromal scar and an irregular surface after a penetrating keratoplasty (PK) in 1986. Intraoperatively, after a deep PTK-ablation a sponge soaked in mitomycin C 0.2% was applied for 2 min and then couposly irrigated with BSS. In the second case of a 60 year old female, who had a PK performed in 1969 followed by an irregular astigmatism and inability to wear a contact lens the first PTK was done in the year 2000. In 2001 a deep topography supported customized ablation (TOSCA) was done to reduce the irregular astigmatism. After development of a significant haze another PTK with adjunctive mitomycin C application was carried out.
Results: There were neither epithelialization problems nor a development of a new haze after a follow-up of 6 months in both cases.
Conclusions: Mitomycin C proved to inhibit the development of significant haze after a deep ablation PTK in corneal grafts.
