Abstract
Demodex Folliculorum, Demodex Brevis and Chronic Blepharoconjunctivitis Assadoullina A., Abri S., Brunner S., Abri A., Binder S.
Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis are two species of Demodex hominis, a mite of the hair follicle, which is known as an obligate human parasite. Its pathogenety is influenced by different factors, such as the condition of the local and systemic immune system, the age or an existing bacterial or viral coinfection. In the literature, prevalence rates are from 13 to 51,5% in the asymptomatic population and from 45 to 68% in a population with chronic blepharitis. In recent studies an association was seen between HLA class I and demodex infestation. A topical application of 2% metronidazole gel is now seen as efficient therapy in this long lasting disease. Additional therapies primarily targeting specific hygienic means (e.g., application of warm compresses with massage of the lid margin). In our video, we are showing both of the demodex species under the light microscope, hoping that this parasite will get more attention as a mediator of chronic blepharoconjunctivitis. |
