PCO Evaluation via the Computer-based Sytem "Evaluation of Posterior Opacification (EPCO System)" in IOLs with Various Designs

Purpose: Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) represents a common late complication after cataract surgery. Two prospective randomised patient groups were enrolled to analyse the rate of PCO using the EPCO sytem. Method: In the first group two silcone IOL-types with different IOL designs and without sharp edges were compared. A total of 33 eyes supplied with the SI 40 NB (monofocal) and 26 eyes with the SA 40 N (multifocal) could be enrolled (median follow up time 41 months). In the second group two acrylic lenses with sharp-edge design were compared: in 20 eyes the AR40e (round anterior edge) and in 16 eyes the Acrysof( sharp anterior edge) were implanted. Analysis of PCO rates were performed using the EPCO system. PCO evaluation was based on digital evaluation for a 3 mm, a 5 mm diameter and for the total diameter area of the implanted IOL, respectively. An EPCO score of 25% or more was defined as relevant.
