Abstract
Wavefront analysis after corneal refractive surgery and intraocular lenses Kohnen T.
Some years ago, examination of the optical system of the eye has been extended to the presentation of higher order aberrations. First, the higher order aberrations of the eye are portrayed and converted into Zernike polynomes. Because higher order aberrations affect the visual acuity, especially the quality of vision of the human eye, there are efforts to search for ways to manipulate the aberrations during corneal refractive surgery or implantation of intraocular lenses. It is tried to improve the visual acuity. With regard to corneal surgery, for the correction of higher order aberrations, wavefront-guided ablation with the excimer laser has been introduced. The higher order aberrations are corrected by the ablation profile of the laser during corneal surgery. Wavefront analysis after corneal refractive surgery did show that standardized ablation could lead to an increase in higher order aberrations, whereas wavefront-guided ablation can decrease higher order aberrations and therefore improve visual acuity. In order to correct the positive spherical aberrations of the cornea, refractive intraocular lenses with negative spherical aberrations have been developed to equalize the refractive error. Analysis of monofocal, bifocal and ashperical intraocular lenses provide an idea of the effect, IOLs may have on the wavefront of the eye. |
