Indications for Local Anesthesia in Eye Muscle Surgery

In the late 19th century cocaine as a highly effective local anesthetic was introduced into ophthalmology by K. Koller. Up to now cocaine together with other anesthetics of the ester- or amid-type is used in ophthalmology in general and also in eye-muscle surgery.
Indication for this type of anesthesia is dependant on patient age, general medical history, ability for cooperation and type of the surgery planned.
Some variants of local anesthesia in strabismus surgery have the advantage of nonimpaired ocular motility and thus intraoperative control and adjustment of the surgical procedure. Indications and contraindications as well as local and systemic side effects and techniques of application are discussed.
