Invitation
Dear Colleagues,
Dear Guests,
It is our great pleasure to extend our cordial invitation to you for the 106th DOG-Congress of the German Society of Ophthalmology which will be held in Berlin from September 18 to 21, 2008.The main topic of the meeting “Perspectives in Ophthalmology – Quality of Life
by Innovation” addresses both novel diagnostic strategies and therapeutic concepts in ophthalmology in an exciting era of medical and technological breakthroughs. While it is important to measure effects on parameters such as visual acuity by evidence-based criteria, it will also be asked, how this relates to the quality of life from the patient’s perspective. This aspect is of increasing relevance in all areas of ophthalmology and even more for the evaluation of efficacy of therapeutic modalities. Moreover, it is relevant for questions of coverage for treatment costs by our health systems in times of limited financial resources.
Further main topics will be imaging in ophthalmology, an area in which the pace of research is accelerating towards spectacular high-resolution technologies, as well as the translation of basic
science into clinical application. Patient organisations now play an important role in many countries. They will be given a platform to present the manifold facets of their endeavours, including counselling services for patients complementing the ophthalmologists’ work and thus adding to patient’s quality of life. Together with ophthalmological societies and professional
associations, patient organisations not only contribute to raising awareness of both the general public and regulatory authorities, but also contribute to funding for research.
The international orientation of the German Society of Ophthalmology and its Annual Congress are underscored by the participation of many international speakers and guests as well as by the
participation of European and other ophthalmological societies with traditionally strong bonds with the DOG. The 106th DOG-Congress will be an opportunity for a lively exchange between experts, general ophthalmologists, industry, and in particular young scientists – in accordance with the spirit of the founders of the DOG. Traditional forms of presentations and focussed symposia
will be complemented by pro-contra-debates with eminent experts. And there will be ample opportunity to meet old and new friends.
The German Society of Ophthalmology looks forward to welcoming you in September 2008 in Berlin!
